"together we can make a world of difference."

Vision

Gundua Tena uses history and social-emotional learning to assist adolescents in their journey to Rediscover and Reclaim (R&R) their cultural identities.

Three-Pronged Approach

  • Mind

Critical awareness is fostered through students situating their experiences in a socio-cultural-historical context.

  • Body

Gross motor movements are spread throughout sessions to promote emotional regulation, this can take the form of an energizing ice-breaker to engaging in sports.

  • Spirit

We grapple with the questions, "What is life giving? What makes you feel alive?" -Rev. Paul Robinson

Wholeness

Gundua Tena aids in the rediscovery and/or broadening of cultural bonds through the reestablishment of language, communication of thoughts and feelings through restorative justice; an understanding of what the body needs and how to sustain one’s self through exercise and diet; and in the reestablishment of spiritual and tribal connections, understanding diaspora and community importance both locally and globally. Through a student's engagement in our program, they will be able to confidently answer the "Who are you," question.

Values

  • We emphasize advocacy under service to others because the young people in this program will have knowledge to actively go against negative images and perceptions of their home communities.

  • We understand the essential nature of coming together as a unit with common responsibilities and interests.

Remembering respect, acceptance and understanding in all things.

  • We strive to continue building upon the strength of the Mind, Body, and Spirit by encouraging perseverance in different aspects of life.

  • In all communication we are open, honest and transparent. We are caring yet centered in truth (the individual and collective) while delivering lessons that involve historical and psychological trauma.
